Fruit Pouches Recalled for Elevated Lead Levels

Parents and caregivers are being advised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration not to buy or feed certain fruit pouches because of elevated lead levels found in certain units of the product.

Consumers who have purchased WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Puree Pouches with specified batch numbers and expiration dates are urged to stop using the product immediately and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. 

Parents and caregivers of toddlers and young children who may have been exposed to lead should contact their health care provider to report their symptoms and receive care. Consumers with questions can email the company at [email protected].

The specific fruit pouches are:

• WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches, all lot codes and expiration dates. These puree pouches are sold nationally and are available through multiple retailers including Amazon and Dollar Tree.

WanaBana has agreed to voluntarily recall all WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches regardless of expiration.

Clatsop County Parks Department Receives Award for Westport Boating Facility Project

Clatsop County Parks Department received the President’s award from the State Organization of Boating Access that nationally recognized the Westport County Park Boating Facility project at Wednesday night’s Board of Commissioners meeting.

The President’s Award is given to an agency, group, local government, or corporation for recreational boating facility projects or activities that are judged to be innovative, useful, of high quality, unique, and economical. 

Clatsop County was recognized for the design of boat ramps which exceed American with Disabilities Act requirements. The ramps allow Individuals in wheelchairs to get into a kayak or boat.

Commissioners, District Attorney and Sheriff Unite to Oppose Measure 110

The Clatsop County Board of Commissioners, Sheriff Matt Phillips and District Attorney Ron Brown called on the Oregon State Legislature to repeal Ballot Measure 110 at the Nov. 8 Regular Board of Commissioners meeting.

“Decriminalization has reduced the deterrent effect of drug laws and sends a permissive message about drug use to children and adults alike, making it more likely that people use drugs,” stated the resolution which was unanimously passed by Commissioners.

November 7 Election Update

Unofficial election results for the November 7, 2023, election are available at the Oregon Secretary of State website.

The last day for Clatsop County Elections to receive valid postmarked ballots by mail is Tuesday, November 14. 

Official election results will be posted Monday, December 4.

King Tides Return

King tides season is returning to the coast. A king tide refers to the highest winter tides that happen each year. 

A king tide may cause coastal erosion, flooding of low-lying areas, and disrupt normal daily routines. 

This is particularly true when a king tide event coincides with significant precipitation or storm surge, creating even higher water levels. Over time, the frequency and effect of king tide events may increase due to sea level rise.

These extreme high tides occur when the moon’s orbit comes closest to the earth, the earth’s orbit is closest to the sun, and the sun, moon and earth are in direct alignment, increasing their gravitational influence on the tides. These tidal events are also known as perigean spring tides.

This season's King Tides will occur:

• November 25 - 27, 2023
• December 13 - 15, 2023
• January 11 - 13, 2024
• February 8-10, 2024

Through our partnership with Energy Trust of Oregon, our Building & Grounds staff works to find the most efficient and cost-effective ways to operate County facilities.  

Recently, our staff consulted with ETO and were able to realize a $7,000 rebate for the Columbia Inn Shelter project heating and insulation renovations.  

Coast Guard Veterans Day Celebration is Friday, November 10

The men and women from Coast Guard Air Station Astoria are hosting its inaugural Veterans Day Celebration Friday, November 10. Everyone is invited to join in the honoring of local veterans throughout our community.

A Coast Guard helicopter will land at 8:30 a.m. at the Barbey Maritime Center in Astoria and will be on display for the event which runs from 9-10 a.m.

Activities include:

• Coffee and a light breakfast for veterans
• Historical videos 
• Navy Band Northwest ensemble will perform
• Welcome and presentation by Commanding Officer Captain M. Scott Jackson

In recognition and celebration of Veterans Day and Seaside American Legion Post 99 100th year of serving veterans and Seaside, a pop-up exhibit will open at 11 a.m. Saturday,  November 11, at the Seaside History Center museum.

Citizen Involvement Advisory Committee Recruitment & Information Session

The Land Conservation and Development Commission (LCDC) is seeking volunteers to serve as a member of the state’s Citizen Involvement Advisory Committee (CIAC).

CIAC members are appointed by LCDC to provide advice on community engagement in land use planning. 

The current CIAC recruitment is for one member representing Oregon's first Congressional District, which covers Clatsop, Columbia, Washington, and Yamhill Counties and portions of SW Portland in Multnomah County.

Applications are due 9 a.m. Wednesday, November 22.

If you are interested in learning more about the CIAC, or are considering applying, DLCD Staff and members of the CIAC are hosting a meeting 11:30 a.m. Friday, Dec 8 to provide information for community members to learn more about CIAC and the work of the coming year.

Public Comment Sought: Western Oregon State Forests Stewardship Agreement 

Stewardship agreements are voluntary agreements between landowners and the Oregon Department of Forestry. 

The Forest Resources Division invites public comments through Sunday, November 26, on the proposed Western Oregon State Forests Stewardship Agreement.

Submit comments via email or postal mail at Attn: Forest Resources Public Comment, Oregon Department of Forestry, 2600 State Street, Salem, OR 97310.

The agreements provide incentives for landowners who voluntarily meet and exceed regulatory requirements. They afford the State Forester a way to engage landowners in long-term agreements that consider natural resource conservation from a property-wide perspective, rather than at the scale of single projects.

State forest lands comprise 3% of Oregon’s forested landscape. The proposed agreement covers approximately 640,000 acres of state forest lands in Western Oregon.

The candidate filing window has opened for the May 21, 2024 Primary Election. 



Positions include County Commissioner District 2, County Commissioner District 4, Sheriff and Precinct Committee Persons.

Once you find the document you are looking for, you can request a copy without paying a research fee.  

Just go to our website under Recording Information – Records Research, click on Locate a Document.

New Recording Requirement

Effective January 1, 2024, documents being recorded in the County Clerk’s property records must have text with font sizes of at least 10-point type. 

We urge all customers to begin updating their forms and templates early to avoid recording delays or extra charges.

This change in font type is due to House Bill 2029, which amended Oregon Revised Statute 205.232.

Board of Property Tax Appeals (BoPTA)

If you disagree with your property value on the tax bill you received this fall, you may appeal to the Board of Property Tax Appeals.

Your evidence must reflect the value of the property as it existed on January 1, 2023. You may access petition forms at the Clatsop County website. 

A filing fee of $35 per account must accompany your petition with one petition per tax account. Appeals must be filed by Thursday, January 2, 2024.

We suggest you contact the Assessment and Taxation Office at 503-325-8522 prior to completing your appeal form.

The Assessment and Taxation Office can assist you in understanding the basis for your property value and, in some cases, may be able to make changes without requiring you to file an appeal.

• An appointment is required prior to coming in for new passport processing. Routine service can take 8-11 weeks or longer. Expedite service can take 5-7 weeks. 

• Please go to our webpage and schedule an appointment for passports, park passes, marriage licenses, dog licenses, and recordings with us.

If you do not have an appointment, you may be asked to wait if we are with someone who has scheduled an appointment.
